Training on Disaster Risk Management at Community Level: Strengthening Adaptive Capacity in Kyrgyzstan
March 1, 2024, 23:24On March 1-2, 2024, Cholpon-Ata hosted workshops on community level disaster risk management as part of the project Mitigating Кisks and Vulnerability to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) and Mudflows in Kyrgyzstan by Enhancing the National Disaster Monitoring System and Community Adaptive Capacity.
The event was attended by representatives from the state administration of Issyk-Kul district, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, deputies from pilot villages, youth organizations, women's councils, environmental activists, and active members of environmental monitoring groups. The training participants will conduct training sessions for other community members.
The aim of this event is to offer methodological support to active representatives of vulnerable communities who are at risk of mountain lake outbursts, mudflows, and landslides. Participants will acquire disaster risk management skills that will enable them to efficiently organize and implement sustainable development measures, taking into account the impact of climate change-related disasters.
This project is being implemented by the United Nations Development Program with financial support from the Government of Japan. The International Public Foundation Roza Otunbaeva Initiative is implementing the third component of the project Supporting Collective Response to Climate Emergency and Creating Sustainable Development Pathways for Human Security and Green Transformation. This component aims to strengthen the national system of disaster monitoring and community adaptive capacity in the pilot communities of Cholpon-Ata city, Chon-Sary-Oy, and Bosteri villages. Active members of the environmental monitoring groups established under the project participate actively in the training.
