Second Festival of Education Presentation: «Green Packet – Glaciers»
April 26, 2014, 06:00April 26 - The Second Education Festival, organized by the Roza Otunbayeva Initiative IPF, began. As part of the day’s activities, the SARA organization for the protection of the environment and the Ministry of Forestry in partnership with RCE Kyrgyzstan presented their "Green Packet - Glaciers" education resource packet. "Green Packet – Glaciers" resource was designed by experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The activity’s purpose was to identify opportunities to use the “Green Packet – Glaciers” multimedia educational resource to promote the most pressing environmental issues in Central Asia like water and water resources, desertification, biodiversity, mountains and glaciers. The presentation was attended by school teachers and university professors, representatives of the State Environmental Protection Agency of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Kyrgyz Academy of Education and RCE Kyrgyzstan, experts and trainers on ESD and NGOs of the Kyrgyz Republic that do environmental education for sustainable development. The education kit was designed for teachers and high school students, as well as for participants in non-formal education systems. At the same time it can be used to organize environmental education in vocational and secondary specialized educational institutions. The kit contains a teacher's guide that includes lesson plans and worksheets for students, a CD called “Green package for Central Asia," a digital resource for additional information on research problems and a game "Challenges and Dilemmas." Users of the "Green Packet" can conduct training sessions by following instructions in the manual. Teachers can use the visual aids that are including among the digital resources, as well as recommended websites. "Green Packet Central Asia" presents and reinforces new knowledge in the field of environment and sustainable development. Its primary tasks are to help shape the way students value the environment and the ethical approaches they take to conservation, as well as new behaviors at school, home and in the community. Students are treated as active partners with teachers in the organization of activities, discussions, role-playing games and decision-making. Teachers and students learn through consideration of benefits of environmental awareness will have on their families and on society as a whole. The packet presents the main issues related to environmental protection and sustainable development in 25 topics, grouped into five chapters. The "Challenges and Dilemmas" game is fun and informative for both children and adults.
