In Tokmok City, initiatives have been launched to address domestic violence by enhancing the gender sensitivity of CPDV members and activists
January 9, 2024, 09:05On December 20, 2023, an introductory training session
took place in Tokmok as part of the project titled "Reducing Domestic
Violence through Increased Gender Sensitivity of Committee for the Prevention
of Domestic Violence (CPDV)
Members and Activists in Tokmok City"
The primary objective of the training is to establish
a Committee for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (CPDV) in Tokmok and enhance the gender sensitivity of CPDV members as a proactive measure to
mitigate the prevalence of domestic violence.
For context, CPDV
were established through a decree by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in
all settlements. However, in reality, CPDVs
are not effectively operational and lack awareness of their roles and
mechanisms to assist victims of domestic violence.
A series of training sessions for activists in Tokmok
aims to facilitate the creation of a CPDV
and impart knowledge about the collaborative mechanisms among various
government bodies for practical assistance to victims of domestic violence. The
training is facilitated by Gulbarchyn Zhumabaeva, a gender rights activist and
expert in gender law.
Both existing and newly established CPDVs share the common goal of
engaging in preventive efforts to reduce domestic violence. Therefore, the CPDV should comprise neighborhood
guards, members of youth committees, social workers, representatives of the
Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Center for Family Medicine.
Unfortunately, as evidenced by practice, many employees of relevant authorities
often neglect the safety of victims, predominantly women, children, and the
elderly, inadvertently supporting perpetrators.
The International Public Foundation "Roza
Otunbaeva Initiative" is actively carrying out the project "Reducing
Domestic Violence through Increased Gender Sensitivity of CPDV Members and Activists in Tokmok
City" with financial support from the US Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic.
