January 11-22 a Natural-Technical Winter School (STEM) is being held for upper class female students in five separate regions of Kyrgyzstan with the support of The “Initiative of Roza Otunbayeva” IPF.

The opening for the natural-technical winter school for Kyrgyzstan’s upper class female students is happening January 11, 2016. The winter schools were implemented by The “Initiative of Roza Otunbayeva” IPF under the project “Women in technology and science” (STEM).

The acronym “STEM” stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. Currently the concept of STEM education is being implemented under various educational programs in most countries of the world.

In most countries, STEM-education is advantageous for the following reasons:

(https://edugalaxy.intel.ru/?automodule=blog&blogid=1392&showentry=6534):

- In the near future, there will be an acute shortage of the following: IT specialists, programmers, engineers, development workers with specialized skills, among others.

- In the distant future, if we imagine what professions there will be, many of them will be involved in the natural sciences with strong ties to technological development. Bio- and nano-technology specialists will be especially required.

- Future specialists will be required to have many various forms of preparation and education in the natural sciences, engineering and technology.

The goal of the “Women in technology and science” project is to draw numerous young women to the technological specialties. It is necessary today to bring more women into the engineering field in Kyrgyzstan, since women gain very few of the available jobs. In opposition to desires, the Government of Kyrgyzstan is not implementing a program to draw future female students to the engineering field.

Since 2014, The “Initiative of Roza Otunbayeva” IPF has been supporting schools directed towards STEM and natural-technological courses which consist of schools’ projects, summer schools, and other short-term courses.

In 2016, Winter Schools are being held at Osh Technology University, Osh State University, Kyzyl-Kiya Institute of Technology, Economics, and Law, BatMU, Naryn State University, Talas State University and “Bilim Bulagy” Education Center in the city of Karakol.

Girls in grades 9-11 attend the School.

Through the school program, the girls take courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics, information-technology, biology and English.

The school runs for two weeks through January 22, 2016.
