“We can’t overcome cancer through government efforts alone; we need social unity between doctors, families and all members of society to defeat cancer,” said former president of the Kyrgyz Republic, Roza Otunbayeva at the Worldwide Day Against Cancer forum on February 4.

“It’s the Enlightenment,” she explained, “the most important thing is education. We can accomplish much by telling people to protect their own health through preventative and diagnostic measures. For example, by performing self-examinations, a woman can detect her own breast cancer in its early stages when the diagnosis is much better.”

She continued: “Five hundred women a year die here in the later stages of breast cancer. These women are often migrants who are not getting proper medical care because of the demands of child-rearing.”
