Letter from the General Secretary of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon.

March 3, 2013, 06:00

Excellency,

After consultation with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to become a member of the Council of the University for Peace (UPEACE). The Council is the supreme authority of the University, and members serve four-year terms, which can be renewed.

The University of Peace, headquartered in Costa Rica, was established on the basis of resolution 35/55, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 5 December 1980. The resolution mandated UPEACE as a specialized international institution of higher education for peace – engaging in teaching, research, post-graduate education and dissemination of knowledge through the interdisciplinary study of all matters relating to peace.

The University for Peace has been engaged in a programme of expansion to fulfill the global mission assigned to it by the General Assembly trough a network of partner institutions all around the world.

I attach great importance to the role and work of the Council of the University. The Acting President of the Council and colleagues form UPEACE will follow up on this letter with further details on your prospective role and engagement, should you accept my invitation.

I very much hope you will agree to become a member of the Council and I look forward to your contribution to the worthy cause of UPEACE.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurance of my highest consideration.

Ban Ki-Moon
