Visit of Kyrgyzstani Ex-President to the United States

Ex-President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Roza Otunbayeva was in New York City and Washington DC on April 12-19 for the Clinton Foundation annual trustee meeting. The goal of the Clinton Foundation’s annual trustee meeting was the examining of the Foundation’s current activities and initiatives with regards to the most pressing issues in the fields of economics, health, climate change among others as well as priorities for the coming year. During this event Ms. Otunbayeva met with President Bill Clinton and Mrs. Hillary Clinton and discussed the realization of projects in Kyrgyzstan in the field of healthcare, specifically the battle against tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and an agreement was reached on the visit of experts to Kyrgyzstan to conduct a needs assessment and evaluate the situation.

On April 12th in New York Roza Otunbayeva participated in a working meeting with the Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Ms. Cihan Sultanoğlu. They discussed the issues of expanding programs in Kyrgyzstan related to the battle against AIDS/HIV and tuberculosis, the development of preschool education, as well as the study and implementation of best practices.

From April 16th through April 18th Roza Otunbayeva was in Washington DC where a meeting was held for the friends and volunteers of the “Roza Otunbayeva Initiative” as well as meetings with representatives from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the director of the US Library of Congress’ Open World program - John O’Keefe, Former American ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic,USAID Assistant Administrator Nisha Biswal, World Bank education expert Ji Yong Ho, and representatives of private non-profit organizations ACDI/VOICA and Development Alternatives, Inc. The main theme of the discussions was the issue of developing cooperation between the “Roza Otunbayeva Initiative” and these organizations on the problems of child and maternal mortality, the promotion of women’s rights, the fight against poverty, the development of preschool education and others.

In Washington the Kyrgyzstani Ex-President also took part in an event at Georgetown University dedicated to the honoring of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate,Muhammad Yunus, who gave a speech on “social business and microcredit”. Ms. Otunbayeva also participated in a joint meeting of the US Government and the World Bank on the strengthening of the potential of women and decreasing poverty.

The American visit of the Kyrgyzstani Ex-President ended with a working meeting in New York City with the founder and CEO of the Open Society Foundation, George Soros. During the meeting concrete decisions and agreements were made for developing cooperation between the two foundations and the promotion of multiyear projects in Kyrgyzstan for the strengthening of parliamentarianism, adopting modern technology and best practices in the area of professional development and education, children’s preschool education, strengthening multiethnic understanding and support for local communities. During the meeting with the president of the Synergos Foundation, Robert H. Dunn, there was a discussion of a visit of American philanthropists to Kyrgyzstan this summer.
