«Music, the Soul of a Nation: Kazakhstan»

Concert and Presentation

February 21, 2014

Moldobasanov Kyrgyz National Conservatory

6:00 p.m.

For the first time, an audience in Kyrgyzstan will be able to hear two ancient instruments – the kobyz and the jetigen – performed live.

The concert will introduce viewers to some of the most striking elements of Kazakh musical culture, including improvisational storytelling competitions between akyns called aitysh, and instrumental melodies named kyui.

The Kazakh and Kyrgyz cultures are inextricably linked and have nourished and enriched each other for centuries. This concert will pay homage to these important cultural ties by featuring a competition between Kyrgyz and Kazakh akyns.

The musical and educational program “Music, the Soul of the People” is a series of eleven concerts presenting the diverse musical cultures of Kyrgyzstan. This concert featuring the musical culture of Kazakhstan will be the fourth event in the series. Previous concerts showcased the Korean, North Caucasian, and Ukrainian musical cultures.

Organizer – The Roza Otunbayeva Initiative International Public Foundation, Assembly of the People of Kyrgyzstan, and the Kyrgyz National Conservatory.

This concert will be held in the large auditorium of the Moldobasanov Kyrgyz National Conservatory and will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free. For references and additional information, please call Asel Djakypbekova at 0312.660.384 or 0772.800.376, or by email at asel.djakypbekova@gmail.com
