This was not a primitive propaganda achievement of Stalin’s USSR but rather a service to the people with realistic art without servility and bias.

“Perestroika in the USSE and the New Wave”
The ideas of Mikhail Gorbachev inspired the young artists of Kyrgyzstan to form the “New Wave”. The most active participants were Jakylopov, Ogobaev, Saliev, Bekov, Shygaev, Baiterekov, and Toktaliev.
The exhibition in the 1980s became a new stage in the development of painting in Kyrgyzstan. This was the last large cultural phenomenon in Soviet Kirgizia and its impact continues to be felt today. Unfortunately the success of that period in only turned into commercial success for a few artists in independent Kyrgyzstan.

“Modern Kyrgyzstani Painting”
It is impossible to discern in what direction painting will develop in modern Kyrgyzstan. But after 2012 new trends began to appear. One faction of artists is attempting to preserve the traditions of the Soviet school. Another is leading the search for national identity through painting. Simultaneously a process of the commercialization of art is underway. The paradox is that all of this is peacefully coexisting within the walls of a single Union of Artists.
Lecturer:
Gamal Bokonbaev, culturologist, director of the “Tolon Museum of Modern Art”, and well-known modern art theorist.
