Mongolia 25 years of democracy

Today, our people are celebrating 25th anniversary of the first democratic election in Mongolia that will take place nationwide on Wednesday and Thursday according to a decree of the President of Mongolia.


The cabinet meeting has issued a governmental resolution on marking the Day of Sovereignty and Democratic Election on July 29 of every year, which is the day of the first democratic election of Mongolia.


The first ever democratic election in Mongolia took place on the 29th of July, 1990 to elect members of the Great People’s Khural and members of the Local Councils. This election marked the first time that more than one person was nominated in one electoral district, and the first time that many political parties participated in it.


Mongolia has been recognized as one of the leading countries in democratic transition, therefore many countries are interested in studying from the Mongolia's experience and practice of democratic development.


In the framework of this event dedicated to 25th anniversary of the Mongolian First Democratic Election, the Office of the President organized the “International Commemorative Conference” at Shangri-La Hotel in Ulaanbaatar.


At the conference, former president of the Kyrgyz Republic Ms Rosa Otunbaeva delivered a speech. She emphasized that her country is studying Mongolia’s experiences on parliamentary structures and their functioning, economic reforms, state's management model and on democratic elections.


At the meeting, former President of the Republic of Korea Mr Lee Myung Bak delivered a speech in which he congratulated Mongolian people.


During the meeting, video greetings were sent by the United Nations Secretary General Mr Ban Ki-Moon, the President of the European Commission Mr Jean-Claude Juncker, President of Austria Mr Heinz Fischer, vice-president of Switzerland Mr Johann Schneider-Ammann, President of the Republic of Korea Ms Park Geun-hye, Prime minister of India Mr Narendra Modi, Prime minister of Japan Mr Shinzo Abe, Chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Myanmar Ms Aung San Suu Kyi, Secretary of State Mr John Kerry and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development of France Mr Laurent Fabius.
